What is tooth whitening and how does it work?
With Christmas around the corner and all those photos being taken, we talk all things whitening
Tooth whitening is a procedure that is safe and very effective if carried out correctly. This treatment can only legally be prescribed by a dentist and should be bought elsewhere.
When this procedure is performed correctly it can transform your smile and boost your self-confidence.

What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is a product with hydrogen peroxide added to break down molecules that caused the teeth to stain. With the use of the product, these molecules become smaller. When this happens they become separated from the tooth which gives an overall brightening effect.
It is worth saying that although it will not normally make teeth brilliantly white, it can lighten teeth by several shades and make a significant difference to your smile.
( It will not change the colour of crowns, or veneers)
Why Do I need to visit a dentist for teeth whitening?
Nowadays you can buy whitening products very easily online. This is something we advise very strongly against and the reason why is:-
To prevent any damage, it is important to always know precisely what is in every treatment applied to your teeth and gums which is something that is not always possible with products purchased online.
Additionally, legislation means that the concentration of the bleach solutions you can purchase is comparatively weak to those that can be prescribed by professional dentists. A 0.1% concentration is simply not strong enough to whiten your teeth and you are likely to be disappointed by the results.
We also see each patient 1st to assess your teeth prior to undergoing any treatment to ensure that you are an ideal candidate and can obtain the results you desire.

How does teeth whitening work?
For the most common form of teeth whitening, you will need to make around 3 trips to the dentist over a 2-3 week period
At your initial consultation, we will assess your teeth to make sure the treatment is suitable for you.
At this stage, we will take an impression of your teeth to create a custom mouthguard and send the mold off to our dental technician to make your trays.
A week later when you return, we will then run you through how to apply the bleaching gel, and provide you with a time frame as to how long the process will take to achieve your desired results.
It is also possible to find dental surgeries that also offer laser whitening. During this treatment, a bleaching solution is painted onto your teeth before a laser or light is shone onto them, which activates the whitening process. We personally opt for the at home gentler on-your teeth procedure.
What are the risks?
All forms of treatments of course carry some risks. The most common is that your gums and may become sensitive to some of the chemicals used during the process. We normally advise using a desensitising toothpaste and it settles down. In rare cases, we will cease the treatment
Overall, however, teeth whitening is very safe and effective, and many patients don’t experience any side effects at all.
At Boundary Implant Centre teeth whitening is very popular so much so that we also offer a 90 minutes per day pre-loaded tray system as well which is £200.00 and takes 5-10 days. Opalescence This is a great on-the-go option for busy people.
