What Is CEREC Dentistry? A Simple Guide to Same-Day Crowns and Restorations

If you are researching modern dental treatments, you may have come across the term CEREC dentistry and wondered what it actually means for you as a patient.

In simple terms, CEREC allows many dental restorations — such as crowns, inlays and onlays — to be designed, made and fitted in a single visit, using advanced digital technology.

At Boundary Implant Centre, we use CEREC to help reduce treatment time while maintaining accuracy, comfort and natural-looking results.

How does CEREC dentistry work?

CEREC uses a fully digital workflow that replaces traditional impressions and lab delays.

1. Digital scanning
A small handheld scanner captures a detailed 3D image of your tooth. This avoids impression trays and allows for excellent precision.

2. Digital design
Your dentist designs your restoration on screen, shaping it to fit your bite and surrounding teeth naturally.

3. In-practice milling
The design is sent to a milling unit within the practice, where your restoration is created from a solid ceramic block.

4. Same-day fitting
Once complete, the restoration is checked, polished, and fitted — often during the same appointment.

What does CEREC stand for?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. While the name sounds technical, the idea behind it is straightforward:
to restore teeth efficiently, accurately and comfortably, without relying on external dental laboratories.

The system was developed by Dentsply Sirona and has been used worldwide for many years.

What types of treatments can CEREC be used for?

CEREC is commonly used for:

  • Dental crowns

  • Inlays and onlays

  • Replacing old or broken restorations

  • Strengthening weakened teeth

Your dentist will always assess whether CEREC is suitable for your individual case.

Why patients choose CEREC dentistry

Patients often prefer CEREC because it offers practical and comfort-related benefits:

  • Fewer appointments

  • No temporary restorations

  • No messy impressions

  • Accurate fit and natural appearance

  • High-quality ceramic materials

For many people, being able to complete treatment in one visit makes dental care far easier to fit into everyday life.

Is CEREC dentistry right for everyone?

CEREC is suitable for many patients, but not all situations are the same. Some complex cases may still benefit from laboratory-based work.

We will always explain your options clearly and recommend what is best for your long-term oral health. Please take your time, and feel free to ask the team any questions — we are here to help you feel confident in your decision.
